VAT at 10%

Adding VAT to a net amount and recovering the net amount from a VAT-inclusive total, in one place.

VAT = net amount × 10%
To go from a gross amount back to net, divide by 1.1

The mistake almost everyone makes

You cannot subtract 10% from a gross amount to remove VAT. Taking 10% off 110,000 gives 99,000, but the real net amount is 100,000. VAT is 10% of the net amount, not of the gross.

Net = gross ÷ 1.1
VAT = gross ÷ 11
Gross = net × 1.1

Dividing the gross by 11 gives the VAT directly: 110,000 ÷ 11 = 10,000.

Note

Korea's standard VAT rate is 10%. Exempt supplies (basic foodstuffs, medical and education services) and zero-rated supplies (exports) exist, so not every transaction carries 10%. Simplified taxpayers use sector-specific rates and a different calculation. For filing, follow a tax professional or the national tax service.

110,000 — multiply the net by 1.1.

Is VAT always 10%?

The standard rate is 10%, but exempt and zero-rated supplies exist and simplified taxpayers use different rates.
