50% Off Calculator

How a 50% discount works, the final price for common amounts, and the stacking mistake people make most often.

50% off = pay 50% of the price
Final price = original × 0.5
—

How to calculate it

Discount = price × 50 ÷ 100
Final = price × 50 ÷ 100 = price × 0.5

Multiplying by the remaining share is faster than subtracting. For 50% off, multiply the price by 0.5 and that is what you pay.

Working backwards to the original price

Original = discounted ÷ 0.5

If a 50%-off price is 50,000, the original was 50,000 ÷ 0.5 = 100,000. Adding 50% back is not the same operation as dividing by 0.5.

Stacked discounts do not add up

Taking 50% off and then a further 10% is not 60% off. The second discount applies to the already-reduced amount: 0.5 × 0.9 = 0.45, an effective discount of 55%.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate 50% off?

Multiply the price by 0.5 for the final amount, or by 0.5 for the discount itself.

What is 50% off 100,000?

50,000. The discount amount is 50,000.

How do stacked discounts work?

They multiply rather than add. 50% followed by 10% gives an effective 55%.
